You\u2019ll likely be stashing some gear at a pre-\/post-trek accommodation or having porters carry extra gear for you, so having a larger bag that fits everything is very convenient.<\/p>\n<p>Multipurpose, comfortable clothing made for <strong>travel<\/strong> and outdoor activities is best. Breathable, abrasion-resistant synthetic fabrics that dry quickly and are suitable for a variety of weather conditions are the way to go. Dressing in layers \u2013 having more, lighter weight items rather than fewer, heavier weight ones \u2013 allows you to add or shed layers depending on weather and level of physical activity. Wise choices in well broken-in footwear are particularly important, as your feet will be put to the test on a daily basis. Keep it in a ziplock bag, in case it rains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>A sleeping bag:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">A four season (-10) bag is suggested during winter, otherwise a three season (-5) bag should be fine (depending on how much you feel the cold). You have the option of hiring a sleeping bag \u2013 just let your leader know at the pre-trek briefing. Hiring a bag will set you back about USD25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>A water bottle:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">You need to carry at least two litres with you each day. We suggest buying two x one-litre bottles (or a hydration bladder) that you can refill each day on the trek (cooled boiled water will be supplied daily).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Waterproof, worn-in hiking boots:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is important. PLEASE PACK COMFORTABLE, WORN-IN, WATERPROOF HIKING BOOTS!! Your boots should be lightweight, and have good ankle support and grip. There are a LOT of rocks and steps along the trail, and you don\u2019t want to be slipping and sliding your way to Machu Picchu! Also, ill-fitting shoes can result in lost toenails. Just saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Day clothes:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>No matter the temperature, trekking definitely warms you up. It\u2019s good to pack layers; clothes that you can easily take off and put on.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 Two pairs of long walking trousers (zip offs are handy, but not a necessity) or exercise tights<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 Two t-shirts<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 Two long-sleeved t-shirts<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 A lightweight rain-jacket or waterproof poncho<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 Five pairs of thick socks<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 Underwear<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Night clothes:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>Keep these packed in your duffel bag, so there\u2019s no chance of them getting wet during the day.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 One fleece jumper\/sweater<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 A pair of long pants<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 Woollen hat and gloves<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 Thermal underwear<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2013 Flip flops\/thongs (to wear around camp in the evening and give your feet a break from boots)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>\u00a0TOILET PAPER!!!<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is just as important as good shoes. One or two rolls should be enough. You should also pack some plastic bags, so you can bag up your paper and rubbish along the way (the porters carry rubbish in large bags). Many trekkers leave their paper on the trail after they relieve themselves, which is\u00a0<em>very<\/em>\u00a0uncool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Basic personal toiletries:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prepare to embrace your grimy side \u2013 you won\u2019t have access to a shower on the Inca Trail until day three, and the facilities aren\u2019t particularly glamourous (you\u2019re unlikely to have any hot water either). \u00a0\u00a0We suggest packing a small towel, deodorant, and a packet of wet wipes \u2013 very handy in lieu of a shower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>A basic first aid kit: <\/strong><\/span>Consisting of bandaids, Imodium, Panadol, rehydration sachets, antiseptic hand gel, insect repellent, and any personal medication you may need along the way. Your leader will have a first aid kit, but it\u2019s good to include a few personal items (just in case).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Sunscreen, sunglasses and sunhat<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>A standard torch\/flashlight<\/strong> <\/span>(a head torch is even better):<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Why? Because when you crawl out of your tent to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, you want to be able to see where you\u2019re going. A head torch negates the need to awkwardly balance your torch on the ground.
