Rainbow Mountain & Qeswachaka Bridge 3 Days / 2 Nights

Rainbow Mountain & Qeswachaka Bridge 3 Days / 2 Nights, The Rainbow Mountain Peru, officially named Vinicunca, is stunning and a bucket list destination for many. Situated near the incredible Ausangate Mountain, they are generally reached on the Ausangate Trek, a 6 day trek.
As Apu Ausangate is the holiest mountain in the region, the deity of Cusco and the highest mountain in the Cusco area (6,385 m / 20,945 ft), the 5, 6 day trek with the bonus of seeing the Rainbow Mountains is well worth it. Since pre-Inca times the mountain has been a place of worship and offerings and this tradition continues today, with the yearly Qoyllur Rit’I pilgrimage, consisting of over 10,000 pilgrims.
Q´eswachaka Bridge This Inca Bridge is the only one still in use. Located in Canas province 3 hours approximately from Cusco by car. Perfect place for people who love nature, adventure and culture must visit this place. Persons with courage can cross this Inca suspension bridge which is 28 meters long and it is made with Ichu (puna straw)

Itinerary

TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01: SOUTHERN VALLEY TOUR- CHILLCA
We will pick you up in Cusco at 8:00AM from whichever hotel you are staying at within Cusco.
The Southern Valley Tour takes you to an area of Cusco that few people visit. With visits to a mix of Colonial, Inca and Pre-Inca sites it offers a snapshot in to over 800 years of Cusco’s history. Starting with visits to some of the Colonial era churches in the suburbs of Cusco you work your way down the valley stopping at the village of Huasao which is renowned for its witch doctors before carrying on to the beautiful Inca water temple at Tipon. From Tipon you carry on to the extensive Pre-Inca site of Pikillacta which was constructed by the Wari culture who occupied the Cusco region before the arrival of the Inca and finally visit the church of Andahuayillas which is known as the Sistine Chapel of the Americas due to its ornate decorations.
During which we will pass through a few traditional villages and see some amazing views of the Andes. Campsite at Chilca.

Places that are visited:

  • Tipon
  • Andahuaylillas
  • Colonial and Inca bridges in Checacupe

Day 02: CHILLCA – RAINBOW MOUNTAIN – CHILLCA –QESWACHACA
After breakfast and packing some snacks to munch on en route, we will begin the hike from Chillca at 3700m/12139 ft elevation. From here it will be a 4 hour uphill hike to reach the famous Rainbow Mountains. Along the way you will enjoy amazing views of the Andes, glacial peaks, red mountains, rocky hills, and traditional llamas and alpacas grazing along the valley. As you reach the summit of the mountain you will be able to spot some Andean wildlife. Vicuñas are considered to be the Andean camel and this is the only place in Cusco where you will see them in the wild. Vicuñas are in the same family as llamas, though are much smaller and they have the most expensive wool in the world.
Once we arrive at the top of Rainbow Mountain, you will have enough time to take in the views and the majesty of this area. All of the mountains that surround this area are red and there are amazing views of the valleys and Ausangate Glacier Peak right in front of you. Ausangate is the tallest mountain of the Cusco region (just under 21,000 ft elevation) and is part of the Cordillera Vilcanota Range. While taking in these magnificent views our staff will bring you some hot drinks while sharing information with you about the composition of these incredible mountains and how they became striated in the rainbows of colors you are seeing. After taking a few amazing pictures and soaking in the views (perhaps we will even see a few condors floating on the air currents) we will begin our descent with a 2 hour downhill hike. We will then meet up with our trekking chef and enjoy a delicious, freshly prepared lunch.
After lunch you can visit some of the local family’s homes where you can see the lifestyle of these people who still practice the ancient traditions of the Inkas. Here they speak Quechua, practicing their earth-based religion, and the agriculture – honoring the mountain spirits and sun to insure that their crops and herds flourish – as well as weaving the textiles that you will find in the museums all around Peru. During which we will pass through a few traditional villages we appreciate since conical shape volcano and beautiful landscapes and see some amazing views of the Andes. We will continue with our trip to Queswachaka, where we will make campsite close to this Bridge, with the opportunity to enjoy the sunset from here and take some photos of the stars. Every year, approximately 1000 villagers of Winchiri and Perccaro come together to reconstruct the bridge, is using skills that have been passed down from generation to generation. The dimension of the bridge are 33 meters long and 1.20 meters wide, made of a straw material and braided. We will continue to visiting the Four Lakes this new ecotourism and cultural circuit offers interesting attractions, starting from Cusco’s South Valley and ascending to the high Andean plateaus, at an altitude superior to 3,600 m.a.s.l.
