Machu Picchu Re-Entry Ticket

Re-entry permit for Machu PicchuMachu Picchu Re-Entry Ticket now required for Inca Trail hikers starting June 2025. Learn who needs it, how the new rule affects your visit, and how to get your ticket in advance to avoid issues at the gate.

This new rule, established by Peru’s Ministry of Culture, is part of a larger effort to improve the management of one of the world’s most visited archaeological wonders.

What is a Machu Picchu Re-Entry Ticket?

The re-entry ticket is a standalone entrance pass that allows visitors to return to Machu Picchu after entering the site once. Under previous regulations, all Inca Trail permits used to include an extra entry; however, starting in mid-2025, this will no longer be sufficient for those planning a second entry, either to explore another circuit or return the next day.

Who is Affected by this New Rule?

Who is Affected by this New Rule – Inca TrailThis change applies to all visitors hiking the Inca Trail, specifically:

  • Those hiking the 2- or 3-day Inca Trail and planning to spend the night in Aguas Calientes and then visit Machu Picchu the next day.
  • Those hiking the 4- or 5-day Inca Trail who wish to revisit the site the following morning for a second perspective, take photos, or make an additional climb such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.

This also applies to those leaving the site for lunch, a rest at their hotel, or other activities and planning to return later. Without a re-entry ticket, entry will not be permitted.

Why Was this Regulation Introduced?

Machu Picchu has long struggled with the challenge of balancing mass tourism with cultural preservation. The new re-entry system accomplishes several key objectives:

  1. Better control of visitor flow through scheduled entrances and single-circuit access.
  2. Better conservation efforts, protecting ruins and fragile paths.
  3. A better visitor experience, with less crowding and more organized access points.

This regulation seeks to preserve the magic of Machu Picchu, allowing visitors to experience its beauty in a safe and organized manner.

Machu Picchu Re-Entry: New Rule & Ticket Cost

Ticket for re-entering Machu Picchu after initial visitTicket prices may vary depending on the ticket type, but average rates are shown below:

  • Standard re-entry to Machu Picchu: $55–$60 USD
  • Re-entry with access to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain: $75–$80 USD

Tickets are limited and must be purchased at least three months in advance. Due to government-set daily entry limits, walk-in tickets and last-minute changes may not be accepted.

What Should You Do If You’re Booking the Inca Trail?

If you’re planning to hike the iconic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, it’s essential to consider the new re-entry ticket policy before finalizing your booking. A few smart steps now can save you stress — and help you make the most of your journey.

  • Decide in advance whether you want to return to Machu Picchu a second time after your hike.
  • Let your tour operator know at the time of booking, so they can secure the re-entry ticket along with your permit.
  • Plan your itinerary accordingly — especially if you’re interested in climbing Huayna Picchu or doing more than one circuit inside the sanctuary.
  • Budget for the additional cost and prepare for limited availability, especially during high season (May–October).

Example scenario (for 2- or 3-day Inca Trail Hikers)

If you hike the 2- or 3-day Inca Trail and enter Machu Picchu in the afternoon, the entrance fee is included in your permit. However, if you spend the night in Aguas Calientes and wish to return to Machu Picchu early the next morning, you must purchase a re-entry ticket in advance. Without it, you will not be able to re-enter, even if you have already paid for the tour.

So, if you’re traveling after June 2025, talk to your travel provider, plan your route carefully, and secure your re-entry ticket in advance.
