Itinerary

Itinerary:

Day 1: Cusco – Tipon Inca Ruins – Pikillacta – Andahuaylillas – Cusco

Embark on a captivating half-day journey through the South Valley Tour of Cusco, where you will explore the lesser-known treasures of Tipon, Pikillacta, and Andahuaylillas. This tour provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Peru’s rich cultural heritage, spanning pre-Incan civilizations, the mighty Inca Empire, and colonial history.

Your adventure begins with a visit to the Tipon Archaeological Complex, an exceptional example of Incan engineering. Renowned for its advanced aqueducts, canals, fountains, and agricultural terraces, Tipon highlights the Incas’ mastery of hydraulics and agriculture. Located just 24 km southeast of Cusco, it remains one of the most peaceful and awe-inspiring sites in the region, offering a serene atmosphere for exploration.

From there, you will continue to Pikillacta, a pre-Incan site from the Wari culture, which thrived between 700 and 900 AD. Known for its sophisticated urban planning, Pikillacta features wide streets, multi-story buildings, and impressive temples, providing an insightful glimpse into the advanced engineering of the Wari civilization. Additionally, a short visit to Rumicolca, a small Incan site once used as a travel checkpoint, adds another fascinating layer to your journey.

Finally, conclude your tour with a visit to the Andahuaylillas Church, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas.” This 17th-century colonial church is famous for its stunning murals, golden altars, and exquisite ceiling artwork, all created by local Quechuan artists during the Spanish colonial period.

The tour wraps up with a return to Cusco, offering the perfect blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty. The entire experience, lasting about 5.5 hours, provides an in-depth exploration of the South Valley, all while avoiding the crowds of more popular attractions.

After exploring the sights, you may choose to stop at Saylla, a nearby village known for its delicious traditional dishes. Enjoy pork chicharrones (crispy fried pork) or roasted guinea pig—a local delicacy (optional, skip if not interested).
