Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail 6 Days / 5 Nights
This amazing Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail runs beneath the sacred mountain Salkantay (6,271 m/20,569 ft), one of the highest and most impressive in the Peruvian Andes, passing through Quechua communities and lesser-known Inca ruins, before joining the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
The Inca Trail follows a cobbled road that starts from the fertile lands near the Sacred Valley of the Incas, at 2,800 m/9,128 ft, and ascends to the infamous Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,200 m/13,776 ft, above the vegetation line.
It then continues into other valleys and mountain passes, passing fascinating archaeological sites built in incredible places with impeccable techniques, and slowly descends into a lush cloud forest rich in Andean flora and fauna. The combination of the beautiful mountain scenery, mysterious ruins and the very special energy of the area make this trek a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Our company’s experienced trekking guides enrich the days with their knowledge and sharing, covering diverse topics such as Inca history, archaeology, architecture, social structure, economy, politics, astronomy, and fascinating traditions and beliefs. Accommodation is in designated and authorized campsites along the route.
This Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail is an exceptional opportunity to experience both the raw nature and powerful landscape of the high mountain areas of the Peruvian Andes and the magnificent and unique Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
It is done with the support of mules and horses for the first two and a half days, then switching to porters as we enter the boundaries of the Inca Trail (pack animals are not allowed within the trail so as not to damage the Inca stone). Because it runs through high altitudes, especially in its first days, a proper acclimatization process before the trek is essential to fully enjoy the experience and minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
Inca Trails
The Inca Trail forms part of an extensive network of paths created by the Incas, who ruled a vast empire in the Andes from the early 15th century until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. The trail served not only as a means of transport but also as a vital route for religious pilgrims journeying to Machu Picchu, a sacred site in the Inca belief system.
The Incas engineered this route with remarkable precision, integrating it into the rugged Andean landscape. Along the way, they built a series of tambo (rest stops) and agricultural terraces, reflecting their advanced understanding of agriculture and architecture. Today, the Inca Trail stands as a testament to their ingenuity, drawing thousands of trekkers eager to experience the same journey that ancient pilgrims undertook.
