Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail To Machu Picchu 6 Days / 5 Nights

Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail 6 days 5 nights, is an incredible journey, combining beautiful landscapes and ancient routes. We’ll see many different Inca ruins that will help us understand Andean life and Inca culture. It is said that the Inca nobility took this Inca Trail on their pilgrimage to the Apu Salkantay (the Protector Mountain God).

For this reason, this Inca Trail alternative is longer and more interesting than the classic Inca trail to Machu Picchu 4d/3n. This does, however, connect up with the classic Inca Trail on Day 3.

Overview

Overview:

The Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail 6 days 5 nights offers tourists the chance to enjoy a mix of both the Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail combined. Starting on the Salkantay Trek the route diverges just before Salkantay Pass and instead goes over the Incachiriaska Pass (Frozen Inca Pass) which leads you down to the village of Wayllabamba where you join the Inca Trail and continue on to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate.

By booking your Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail 6 days 5 nights with Cusco Journeys & Adventure you are choosing the best. Don’t believe us? Check out our reviews on TripAdvisor!

Itinerary

Itinerary:

Pre-Trek Briefing

You will have a thorough briefing with your guide 1 or 2 days before your Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail 6 days 5 nights.

Your guide will meet you at your hotel and you can take this opportunity to ask questions and make any final preparations for Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail 6 days 5 nights.

Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa – Ichupata

We will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning and have a beautiful scenic drive of 3 hours duration to Mollepata. At Mollepata we will have breakfast at one of the local houses. During this portion of the drive we will have our first views of the magnificent Salkantay and Humantay Mountains, as well as observe lush vegetation and the fields of local families growing potatoes, quinoa, lima beans, etc.

At this point we will arrive at Soraypampa (3,800 m/12,467 ft), the trailhead for the Salkantay trek, and meet our support staff, who will pack everything for the trek and load the equipment onto horses. The first thing we will do is hike up to the magnificent Umantay Lake. After enjoying the beauty and taking pictures, we will hike back down to Soraypampa and “officially” begin the trek.

The hike today is uphill from Soraypampa to Ichupata (4,300 m / 14,104 ft) in the upper valley. This is a 5 to 6 hour hike. Along the way we will pass Salkantaypampa, which is our lunch spot.

Ichupata is our camp for the night. When we arrive, we will settle in, have happy hour and a hearty dinner.

  • Meals:  Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Distance Covered: 12 km
  • Approximate Walking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Lowest elevation: 3,800 m/12,467 ft
  • Highest elevation: 4,300 m / 14,104 ft

Day 2: Ichupata –Incachiriasca pass – Pampacahuana

After a savory breakfast, we will begin the 3 to 4 hour steep climb to towards the Incachiriasca pass (4850m/15908ft), the highest of the entire route. We will have amazing views of Apu Salkantay and glacial moraines during this portion. We will pause at the top of the pass to take pictures and enjoy the magnificent view.

We will then descend towards our lunch spot at Sisaypampa, a flat area from which one can observe the neighboring Salkantay Valleys. This is a place where we might see Andean condors.

After lunch we continue towards the Pampacahuana community (3,700 m / 12,136 ft), located next to an original Inca canal. This is our camp for the night.

  • Meals:  Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Distance Covered: 14 km
  • Approximate Walking Time: 8 hours
  • Lowest elevation: 3,700 m / 12,136
  • Highest elevation: 4,850 m / 15,908 ft
  • Difficulty: challenging

Day 3: Pampacahuana – Paucarcancha – Huayllabamba -Llulluchapampa

Today we change pace as we join the Classic Inca Trail. We begin by hiking downill for 3 hours from Pampacahuana to Paucarcancha (3133 m / 10,276 ft)). We will have lunch there and visit the Inca Site. This is where we will say goodbye to our horsemen and the horses, and meet our porters.

From Paucarcancha we will hike 25 minutes downhill to the last village on the Classic Inca Trail, Huayllabamba (2,866 m / 9,400 ft). This will be followed by a 4 hour uphill hike to Llulluchapampa (3,700 m/12,136 ft). On the way we will hike through many ecosystems, including the cloud forest. Llulluchapampa is our camp for the night. It is located very close to Dead Woman´s Pass.

  • Meals:  Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Distance Covered: 15 km/9 ½ miles
  • Approximate Walking Time: 8 hours
  • Lowest elevation: 2,866 m / 9,400 ft
  • Highest elevation: 3,700 m/12,136 ft
  • Difficulty: challenging

Day 4: Llulluchapampa -Dead woman’s pass – Pacaymayo – Chaquicocha

Today is our longest day and crosses two high passes; luckily for us we chose to camp last night at a location where we’re nearly at the first pass, Dead woman’s pass (4,215 m/13,825 ft), the highest point of the Inca Trail. Then after we’ve gone over the second pass (Runcuraccay pass 3,950 m/ 12,959 ft), the walking is easy with very few ups and downs to contend with.

Today sees some of the best views and scenery of the whole Inca Trail and includes visits to two Inca sites, Runcuraccay and Sayacmarca (3,850 m/12,628 ft). There are fantastic views of high snow-capped peaks for most of the day and the cloud forest all around us today is by far the most visually stunning.

Our campsite for tonight is at Chaquicocha (3,620 m/ 13,073ft), from where we’ll get our first views of Ahobamba Valley far in the distance (the site itself is hidden from view).

  • Meals:  Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Distance Covered: 13 km/7 ½ miles
  • Approximate Walking Time: 7 hours
  • Lowest elevation: 3,680 m/12,073 ft
  • Highest elevation: 4,215 m/13,825 ft
  • Difficulty: challenging

Day 5: Chaquicocha – Puyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna

After an early breakfast we will continue up an easy climb, to arrive at the third pass, the Abra de Phuyupatamarca (3700m/12136ft).

Along this climb we can appreciate the magnitude of the Incas´ ancient craft, by walking along paths semi-detached from the mountain, and seeing rocks that fill up ravines in perfect order, saving the trail from the multileveled Andean geography. We go through an Inca tunnel to later arrive at the aforementioned pass and down to the complex of the same name.

This is one of the most complete and best-preserved archaeological complexes along the Inca Trail to Machupicchu, and is located on the highest point of a mountain. Curiously, Phyupatamarca means ¨town over the clouds¨. From above, one can observe a sophisticated sacred complex made up of water fountains with solid foundations, and also impressive views of the Urubamba River valley and the long descending stone steps along which we will continue on to Wiñaywayna (2650m/8692ft).

The campsite has the same name as the complex located only five minutes away. Wiñaywayna is an impressive complex made up of an agricultural center with numerous terraces, a religious sector and an urban sector.

  • Meals:  Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Accommodations: Camping
  • Distance Covered: 10 km/6 ½miles
  • Approximate Walking Time: 5 hours
  • Lowest elevation: 2,600 m/7,691 ft
  • Highest elevation: 3700m/12136ft
  • Difficulty: moderate

Day 6:   Wiñaywayna – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Cusco

On this last day we get up at 4.00 am to leave Wiñaywayna an hour later and climb to the Intipunku, or the Sun Gate. This will take an hour of hiking along a trail of flat stones on the edges of cliffs in highland jungle. From this fabulous spot, we may see the sunrise over the sacred citadel of Machupicchu.

From Intipunku we descend into Machupicchu, and 40 minutes later we enter the citadel from the highest point through the ¨House of the Guardians¨. We then descend to the control point where we register ourselves and leave our backpacks. We immediately begin a complete guided tour of the Inca citadel that will take approximately two hours. You will then have free time to walk around, climb the Huaynapicchu Mountain, where one can experience spectacular views of all of Machupicchu, the valleys and mountains that surround it (please note that there are only 400 visitors allowed per day), or visit the Temple of the Moon or the impressive Inca Bridge.

In the afternoon, we meet in the town of Aguas Calientes where, if you like, you can visit and relax in its hot springs. From here we take the train back to the city of Cusco, where we arrive after nightfall.

  • Meals:  Breakfast
  • Lowest elevation: 2,040 m/ 6,691 ft
  • Highest elevation: 2,740 m/ 8,552 ft

Note: Before the government brought the new legislation about protecting the Inca Trail, horses were the main transport to carry all the equipments from the trailhead to Wayllabamba. The Inca trail was replaced with our porters since they banned using horses on the classic Inca trail. There will be the same tour guide and cook throughout your tour. All meals are prepared on site, so that you will have all fresh food.
