Day 01: Cusco – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata

Highlight of the Day: Travel from the Andes into the Amazon rainforest while searching for the iconic Cock-of-the-Rock and other wildlife of the cloud forest.

Very early in the morning, we depart from Cusco in our private vehicle. Along the way, we cross the spectacular Andes Mountains and visit the Chullpas of Ninamarca, a fascinating pre-Inca cemetery.

We then continue to the picturesque colonial town of Paucartambo, where we visit the local museum and learn about the traditions and culture of this historic region.

As we continue our journey, we enter the cloud forest, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Peru. Here, we have opportunities to observe orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and a variety of bird species, including the famous Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird. With some luck, we may also spot monkeys and the elusive Spectacled Bear.

After lunch along the route, we continue descending toward the Amazon Basin. In the afternoon, we arrive at Pilcopata Lodge, surrounded by lush rainforest vegetation. After settling into our rooms, we can relax and enjoy the sounds of the jungle.

Day 02: Pilcopata – Aguas Calientes – Boca Manu

Highlight of the Day: Navigate the Alto Madre de Dios River while observing monkeys, birds, and the incredible landscapes of the Amazon rainforest.

After an early breakfast, we take a short walk through the forest to search for monkeys, birds, and other wildlife. We then visit a coca plantation and an animal rescue center where we learn about local conservation efforts.

Continuing by vehicle, we arrive at the Port of Atalaya on the Alto Madre de Dios River. Here, we board our motorized boat and begin our journey deeper into the Amazon. Along the riverbanks, we may observe herons, vultures, cormorants, kingfishers, and many other bird species.

Later, we stop at the natural hot springs of Aguas Calientes, where we can relax while surrounded by pristine rainforest. After lunch, we continue downstream until reaching Boca Manu, where we spend the night.

Day 03: Boca Manu – Reserved Zone – Casa Matsiguenka

Very early in the morning, we visit a nearby parrot clay lick where several species of parrots gather to feed on mineral-rich clay. Afterward, we continue by boat toward the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park.

We make a brief stop at the Limonal Ranger Station, where permits are checked before entering the protected area. As we travel upriver along the Manu River, we search for wildlife including capybaras, caimans, river turtles, monkeys, macaws, toucans, and numerous bird species. With luck, we may even spot a jaguar resting along the riverbanks.

In the afternoon, we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka, a remote eco-lodge owned and operated by the indigenous Matsiguenka community. After settling into our rooms, we explore nearby trails in search of wildlife.

Using a catamaran, we quietly navigate the lake in search of giant river otters, one of Manu’s most iconic species. We also look for black caimans, hoatzins, kingfishers, monkeys, and many other species that inhabit this remarkable ecosystem.

After lunch, we continue exploring rainforest trails and visit Cocha Otorongo, where an observation tower provides panoramic views over the surrounding forest canopy. This area offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

If conditions allow, we may stop once again at the hot springs before continuing toward Amazon Manu Lodge. Upon arrival, we settle into our comfortable rooms and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the rainforest.

After arriving at Amazon Manu Lodge and enjoying lunch, we have time to explore the surrounding trails accompanied by our guide.

These walks provide excellent opportunities to observe wildlife, discover medicinal plants, and experience the rich biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest before returning to the lodge to relax and enjoy the peaceful jungle atmosphere.

Along the trails, we search for monkeys, toucans, macaws, woodpeckers, frogs, butterflies, and many other species that inhabit this region. Our guide will explain the medicinal plants, giant trees, and ecological relationships that make Manu one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.

After lunch, we continue exploring different habitats and enjoying excellent birdwatching opportunities. In the evening, we return to the lodge for our final night in the Amazon rainforest.

Day 08: Harpia Lodge – Atalaya – Cusco

After an early breakfast, we travel by boat to the Port of Atalaya, where our private vehicle awaits. From there, we begin our scenic return journey to Cusco.

As we travel through the cloud forest and across the Andes, we make occasional stops for photographs and wildlife observation whenever conditions allow. This final journey offers one last opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary landscapes that connect the Amazon rainforest with the high Andes.

We arrive in Cusco between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM and transfer you to your hotel, marking the end of an unforgettable adventure through Manu National Park.
