Highlight of the day: Explore the Ballestas Islands, observe sea lions and Humboldt penguins, visit the Huacachina Oasis, and travel through the coastal desert of southern Peru. Your adventure begins with a 4:30 AM pickup from your hotel in Lima, followed by a journey along the Pan-American Highway to Paracas. Upon arrival in Paracas, we board a boat for an excursion to the Ballestas Islands. Along the way, you will see the mysterious Candelabra geoglyph, an enormous figure etched into the hillside overlooking Paracas Bay. Its origin remains unknown and continues to be one of the region’s most intriguing mysteries. Continuing to the Ballestas Islands, home to sea lions, Humboldt penguins, pelicans, cormorants, and other marine wildlife, we navigate among impressive rock formations and sea caves located along the Peruvian coast. Afterward, we visit the Paracas National Reserve, one of Peru’s most important protected coastal ecosystems, known for its desert landscapes, ocean views, and diverse wildlife. Next, we continue to Ica and visit the Huacachina Oasis, a natural lagoon surrounded by large sand dunes. This small desert oasis has become one of the most visited attractions in southern Peru and offers excellent opportunities to enjoy the unique scenery of the Ica Desert. After the visit, you will have free time for lunch at a local restaurant (not included). In the afternoon, we continue south to Nazca. Located in a fertile valley surrounded by desert landscapes, Nazca is home to one of the most important archaeological sites in South America and serves as the gateway to the famous Nazca Lines. Highlight of the day: Fly over the Nazca Lines and observe ancient geoglyphs such as the Hummingbird, Monkey, Condor, Spider, Dog, and Astronaut from the air. After breakfast, we transfer to Nazca Airport for a flight over the world-famous Nazca Lines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Peru’s most important archaeological attractions. During the approximately 45-minute flight, you will observe some of the most famous Nazca geoglyphs, including the Astronaut, Monkey, Condor, Hummingbird, Spider, Dog, and other enormous figures created by the Nazca culture more than 2,000 years ago. These ancient desert drawings continue to attract archaeologists and visitors from around the world. Before boarding, you will watch a short presentation explaining the history of the Nazca culture and the different theories regarding the purpose and meaning of these remarkable geoglyphs. The flight is operated in a CESSNA 206 aircraft with two pilots and six passengers. Each passenger is guaranteed a window seat, and the aircraft will make passes from both sides to provide excellent views of every figure. After the flight, we transfer to the bus station for the return journey to Lima. Upon arrival, a Cusco Journeys representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel.
