Choquequirao Trek 5 Days / 4 Nights
The Choquequirao Trek 5 Days 4 Nights is a remote and scenic hiking adventure in Peru, perfect for travelers who want to explore an alternative to Machu Picchu.
Often referred to as the “sister city of Machu Picchu,” Choquequirao is a vast and remote Inca archaeological site hidden high above the Apurimac Canyon. Unlike Machu Picchu, this incredible destination remains largely undiscovered, with only a small number of travelers reaching its terraces and temples each day.
This 5-day trek to Choquequirao takes you through dramatic Andean landscapes, from deep canyons and lush valleys to high mountain viewpoints, offering breathtaking scenery and a deeper connection with Inca history and nature.
If you’re looking for adventure, challenge, and a unique alternative to the classic Inca Trail, this trek is the perfect choice.
The Choquequirao Trek 5 Days 4 Nights is a demanding route designed for travelers who want a more remote experience in the Andes, far from the typical tourist routes. The trek covers around 64 km (40 miles), with steep descents into the Apurimac Canyon followed by long uphill climbs toward the archaeological site, making it a physically challenging journey. Choquequirao sits above 3,000 meters and remains largely unexplored, with only part of the site restored. This allows visitors to experience the ruins in a much quieter and more natural setting. Along the way, you will pass through changing landscapes, from dry canyon sections to green mountain slopes, with constant views of the surrounding Andes. The Choquequirao Trek 5 Days 4 Nights is more than just a hike — it’s a journey into untouched landscapes, rich history, and authentic Andean culture. Each step brings you closer to one of the most fascinating hidden Inca cities, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure as you follow the detailed itinerary below. Start your Choquequirao Trek 5 Days 4 Nights with an early morning drive to Capuliyoc, followed by a downhill hike into the Apurimac Canyon. Enjoy scenic views along the way before arriving at Chiquisca camp for the night. Along the route, you will notice the changing landscapes as you descend deeper into the canyon. Descend to the Apurimac River, then begin a challenging uphill hike through zigzag trails. Pass Santa Rosa and continue to Marampata, where you have lunch and spend the afternoon resting at camp. This section offers some of the most impressive views of the canyon as you gain elevation. Spend the day exploring the Choquequirao archaeological site with your guide. Visit terraces, temples, and ceremonial areas while enjoying panoramic views of the canyon. Return to camp in Marampata. You will also have time to take photos and experience the quiet atmosphere of this remote Inca site. Begin the return journey with a descent to the river, followed by a steady climb back to Chiquisca. Take in the changing landscapes and enjoy your final night on the trail. This day allows you to appreciate the route from a different perspective as you retrace your steps. Hike uphill to Capuliyoc and enjoy the last views of the Apurimac Canyon. Then, return to Cusco by private transport, marking the end of your Choquequirao trek experience. On the way back, you can relax and reflect on the journey through the Andes.
We leave Cusco early in the morning with a pickup from your hotel at 4:30 am, followed by a private drive to the village of Cachora. Along the route, you will enjoy wide Andean landscapes and distant views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains. Once in Cachora, we take a short walk through the town to observe daily life in this quiet Andean community. After breakfast, we continue by vehicle to Capuliyoc (2,890 m / 9,482 ft), where the trek begins and we meet our trekking team. From this point, the trail descends into the Apurimac Canyon. The path goes downhill for several hours, passing dry mountain slopes and small cultivated areas before arriving at Chiquisca (1,900 m / 6,234 ft). Along the way, the environment begins to change as we move deeper into the canyon. The temperature becomes warmer, vegetation becomes denser, and the sound of the Apurimac River grows stronger. By the end of the day, we arrive at camp in Chiquisca, where we enjoy dinner and rest for the night. After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we continue our journey and begin our hike. We start with a descent of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes toward the deepest part of the valley, known as Playa Rosalina (1,500 m / 4,921 ft). After crossing the pedestrian bridge over the Apurimac River, we begin the most demanding part of the trek with a steady zigzag ascent. From the bridge, we hike for about 2 hours uphill until we reach Santa Rosa Baja (1,970 m / 6,463 ft), where we take a short break. Then, we continue ascending for approximately 3 more hours toward Marampata (2,900 m / 9,514 ft). We arrive in Marampata around midday, where we enjoy a well-deserved lunch with wide views of the Apurimac Canyon and surrounding mountains. After lunch, the rest of the afternoon is free to rest and recover from the climb. This will also be our campsite for the night, allowing you to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote Andean location before dinner. Today is the most important day of the Choquequirao trek, as we dedicate our time to exploring this remarkable archaeological complex. After breakfast at camp, we begin our guided visit through the different sectors of the site, following ancient paths that connect terraces, temples, and ceremonial areas. As we walk through Choquequirao, your guide will explain the history, architecture, and the role this site played during the final years of the Inca Empire. Located high above the Apurimac Canyon, the setting offers incredible views in every direction, making this experience very different from other popular destinations in Peru. Choquequirao sits at over 3,000 meters (10,000 ft) and is considered larger than Machu Picchu, although much of it is still being uncovered. This makes the visit feel more authentic, as you explore a place that remains partly hidden and less visited. During the day, we will also visit the famous terraces with stone llama figures, one of the most unique features of this site. Along the way, you will have time to take photos, rest, and fully enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Andes. In the afternoon, we return to our campsite in Marampata (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), where we relax and enjoy dinner after a full day of exploration. After breakfast, we begin the return journey along the same trail, offering a different perspective of the landscapes we crossed earlier. First, we descend toward the Apurimac River, a section that takes around 2.5 hours. The trail can be steep in parts, so we walk carefully at a steady pace while enjoying the canyon views and changing vegetation. At Playa Rosalina, we stop for lunch and take time to rest near the river. In the afternoon, we continue with a gradual uphill hike to Chiquisca (1,900 m / 6,213 ft), where we spend our final night. Although the climb requires effort, your guide sets a comfortable pace for the group, allowing everyone to finish the day strong. Later, we enjoy our last dinner together at camp and share the experience with the team. On the final day, we leave early to take advantage of the cooler morning temperatures. The trail climbs steadily for about 3 to 4 hours until we reach Capuliyoc. From the top, you enjoy one last view of the Apurimac Canyon and surrounding mountains. It’s a great moment to reflect on the journey and appreciate everything experienced over the past days. Afterward, we share a final lunch with the group before saying goodbye to the trekking team, including the muleteers and cook who supported the expedition. Finally, we board our private transport and begin the drive back to Cusco. On the way, we make a short stop in Curawasi before arriving in the city in the late afternoon, where we drop you off at your hotel.

Yes, the Choquequirao trek is worth it for travelers looking for a more remote and less visited alternative to Machu Picchu. The experience offers impressive scenery, fewer visitors, and a deeper connection with nature. It is ideal for those seeking a more authentic and adventurous trekking experience in Peru. Choquequirao is located at approximately 3,050 meters (10,000 ft) above sea level. The altitude is moderate compared to other treks in Peru, but it can still affect some travelers. Proper acclimatization in Cusco before starting the trek is recommended. Yes, the Choquequirao trek is generally more physically demanding than the Inca Trail. It involves longer distances and continuous elevation changes, with fewer developed facilities along the route. However, it offers a more remote and less crowded experience. Choquequirao receives far fewer visitors compared to Machu Picchu, often only a small number of travelers per day. This makes the experience much quieter and more exclusive. Visitors can explore the site without crowds, which adds to its appeal. No special trekking permit is required to visit Choquequirao. However, an entrance ticket to the archaeological site is necessary and is included in most guided tours. This makes the planning process simpler compared to other treks in Peru. At Cusco Journeys, we’re committed to making your adventure in Peru memorable, safe, and easy to enjoy. This brief guide includes the most important details to review before starting your trek or tour — from altitude preparation and luggage management to Machu Picchu entry and health tips. Take a moment to read it carefully; it will help you get ready and experience the magic of the Andes with comfort and confidence. All pre-trek briefings are personally conducted at your hotel in Cusco around 5:00 pm, one or two day before your trek or tour begins. The meeting lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes and is an essential part of your preparation. During this session, our guide will go over the itinerary in detail, provide your duffel bag, and answer any final questions to ensure you’re fully prepared for your adventure. It’s very important to be well acclimated to the altitude before starting any trek. Cusco lies at 3,400 meters (11,150 ft) above sea level, and your body needs time to adjust to the thinner air. We recommend that you arrive in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before your trek begins to prevent altitude sickness and to enjoy your trip without discomfort. During your acclimatization days, take it easy and explore some nearby attractions: These short tours are perfect for getting used to the altitude while discovering the region’s rich history. If you have an outstanding balance, please make the payment at least two days before your trek or tour. Otherwise, your reservation cannot be confirmed. Whenever possible, we kindly ask you to settle the remaining balance in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing session. There are several ATMs along Avenida Sol where you can withdraw both currencies. You may also pay by credit/debit card or PayPal, either online or in person; however, please note that a 5% service fee will be applied by our payment gateways (Niubiz and PayPal). You’ll receive a duffel bag or canvas case during the briefing. Size: 60 × 24 × 22 cm (23.6 × 9.45 × 8.66 in), Maximum weight: 6 kg / 13 lb, including clothes and personal items. Our team of porters will carry your bag throughout the trek and hand it back to you at each camp. Remember that this limit includes your sleeping bag and any personal belongings you wish to take. Absolutely! During your trip, you may store your main luggage safely at our office (arrange it with us during your briefing or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge. Any items you won’t need during the trek can remain at your hotel — most hotels offer secure luggage storage. Please avoid leaving valuables in your bags; instead, place them in the hotel safe and request an itemized receipt, as many insurance companies require this in case of loss. For added security, you can also store important items such as credit cards in a sealed and signed envelope. All pick-ups are made from your hotel within Cusco City. We recommend staying in the historic center for easier access. Our guide will confirm your pick-up time one day before the tour, but please note that it may vary by 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic and hotel locations. Cusco is an ancient city with narrow, cobbled streets, and some hotels or Airbnbs may not have direct vehicle access. If your accommodation is in such an area, we’ll coordinate the closest possible meeting point for your convenience. Returning from Machu Picchu involves several steps, but don’t worry — everything is included in your tour. After visiting Machu Picchu, you’ll take a 25-minute bus down to Aguas Calientes (buses operate on a first-come, first-served basis). From there, you’ll board a train to Ollantaytambo; your guide will provide the tickets and indicate your departure time. Please arrive at the platform 30 minutes before departure. The train ride takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, followed by a 2-hour bus journey back to Cusco City. Our group tours bring together travelers of different ages and fitness levels. Everyone can walk at their own pace, and our guide will manage the group so that all participants enjoy the experience comfortably. If changes to the itinerary are needed, the guide will decide after consulting with the group. Occasionally, strikes or protests may occur in Peru, which can affect roads or train schedules. In these cases, Cusco Journeys will make every effort to maintain your itinerary or adjust departure times if needed. Your safety always comes first, and all decisions will be made to protect it. You are responsible for your personal belongings throughout the tour. Please be mindful of where you leave your items and make sure to remove everything from our vans, tents, and restaurants after each stop. Avoid leaving anything unattended during the hike, as other trekkers or staff might mistake it for lost property.
