Pallay Punchu reaches approximately 4,730 m (15,518 ft) above sea level. The high elevation can make the hike feel more demanding, even though the walking distance is relatively short.

2.- How difficult is the Colca Canyon Trek 2 Days 1 Night?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging due to steep descents, early morning ascents, and high-altitude hiking. While technical climbing skills are not required, hikers should have a reasonable level of fitness and stamina to manage long walking hours on uneven terrain and varying elevations.

3.- Is the Colca Canyon Trek Worth It?

Yes, the Colca Canyon Trek is considered one of the best hiking adventures in Peru. The trek combines spectacular canyon landscapes, traditional Andean villages, opportunities to observe the majestic Andean condor, and an overnight stay in the famous Sangalle Oasis. In just two days, travelers experience a unique mix of nature, culture, and outdoor adventure while exploring one of the deepest canyons in the world.

4.- Can I see condors during the Colca Canyon Trek?

Yes, the tour includes a visit to Cruz del Condor, one of the best locations in Peru to see the flight of the Andean condor. Morning hours are ideal for sightings, as thermal air currents make it easier for the condors to glide gracefully over the canyon.

5.- What type of accommodation is provided in Sangalle Oasis?

Accommodation at Sangalle Oasis consists of rustic bungalows located at the bottom of the canyon. Guests can enjoy natural surroundings, green areas, and natural pools, making it a perfect place to rest and recover after the first day’s trek.

During these months, visitors enjoy clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and excellent conditions for hiking and wildlife observation. To confirm your reservation, you must pay any outstanding balance at least two days before the trek. Whenever possible, we ask that you pay in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing session. Several ATMs are conveniently located around Plaza de Armas for cash withdrawals.

                  Before You Go

                  Travel Information

At Cusco Journeys, we’re committed to making your adventure in Peru memorable, safe, and easy to enjoy. This brief guide includes the most important details to review before starting your tour, from altitude preparation and luggage management to Machu Picchu entry and useful travel tips.

Take a moment to read it carefully. In addition, reviewing these details in advance will help you understand the arrangements for your journey and travel with greater confidence.

                  Briefing Before the Tour

All pre-tour briefings are personally conducted at your hotel in Cusco around 5:00 pm, one or two days before your tour begins. The meeting lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes and provides an important opportunity to review your travel arrangements.

During this session, your guide will go over the itinerary in detail, provide your tickets and transportation information, and answer any final questions. Your guide will also confirm the important details for the following day.

                  Acclimatization in Cusco

Cusco is located at approximately 3,400 meters (11,152 ft) above sea level. For this reason, we recommend allowing your body enough time to adjust to the altitude before beginning your sightseeing activities.

We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before your tour whenever possible. Staying hydrated, eating light meals, and avoiding excessive alcohol can help you feel more comfortable during your first days in the Andes.

                  Final Balance Payment

If you have an outstanding balance, please make the payment at least two days before your tour. Otherwise, we cannot finalize your reservation.

Whenever possible, we kindly ask you to settle the remaining balance in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing session. Several ATMs are available along Avenida Sol where you can withdraw both currencies.

You may also pay by credit or debit card or PayPal, either online or in person. However, payments through Niubiz or PayPal include a 5% service fee.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept bank checks or traveler’s checks for balance payments.

Can I Store My Luggage at Your Office?

Absolutely! During your trip, you may store your main luggage safely at our office or at your hotel, both free of charge. Please arrange this with us during your briefing or by email before your departure.

Any items you won’t need during the Machu Picchu portion of the tour can remain at your hotel. Most hotels offer secure luggage storage. Please avoid leaving valuables in your bags. Instead, place them in the hotel safe and request an itemized receipt if your travel insurance requires one.

For added security, you can also store important items such as credit cards in a sealed and signed envelope.

                  Passport Requirements

Your original passport is required for entry to Machu Picchu and must match the passport information provided during your reservation.

If you renew or replace your passport after booking, please notify us immediately so our team can update your entrance tickets whenever regulations allow. We also recommend carrying a digital copy of your passport throughout your trip.

Machu Picchu Entrance Circuits and Schedule

Machu Picchu operates with specific timed entries and designated visitor circuits to help preserve the archaeological site and manage visitor access.

                  Main Visitor Circuits

                  • Circuit 1: Upper viewpoints and panoramic terraces.
                  • Circuit 2: Central area of the citadel.
                  • Circuit 3: Lower sector and agricultural terraces.

Most of our tours use the circuit assigned according to ticket availability and government regulations. Therefore, the exact circuit and entrance time may vary depending on the official ticket allocation.

Once you leave Machu Picchu, re-entry is not allowed. If you wish to explore another route or hike one of the mountains, you can request an additional entrance ticket, subject to availability and extra cost.

                  Hotel Pick-Up

Complimentary pick-up is available from hotels located within Cusco City. We recommend staying in the historic center for easier access.

Your exact pick-up time will be confirmed one day before the tour. However, it may vary by approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic conditions and hotel locations.

Cusco is an ancient city with narrow, cobbled streets, and some hotels or Airbnbs may not have direct vehicle access. If your accommodation is in such an area, we’ll coordinate the closest possible meeting point for your convenience.

Return from Machu Picchu to Cusco

After visiting Machu Picchu, you’ll take the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes. Bus services operate continuously, and boarding is organized on a first-come, first-served basis.

From there, you’ll board the Vistadome Train to Poroy. Your guide or representative will provide your tickets and indicate your departure time. Please arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure.

The train journey takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, followed by ground transportation back to Cusco City.

                  Weather and Clothing

Cusco has two distinct seasons. The dry season (April to October) usually offers sunny days and cool nights, while the rainy season (November to March) brings occasional afternoon showers.

Because temperatures can change significantly during the day, we recommend wearing layered clothing throughout the year. A waterproof jacket is especially useful during the rainy season.

We also recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes for your sightseeing activities.

                  Group Tours

Our group tours welcome travelers of different ages and fitness levels. Everyone can explore at a comfortable pace while following the guide’s instructions throughout the journey.

Occasionally, minor schedule adjustments may be necessary due to weather conditions, operational requirements, or government regulations. If this occurs, your guide will keep the group informed and ensure the best possible experience.

                  Strikes and Demonstrations

Although uncommon, strikes or demonstrations may occasionally affect transportation services in Peru. If this happens, Cusco Journeys will make every reasonable effort to maintain your itinerary or provide suitable alternatives whenever possible.

Your safety and well-being remain our highest priorities, and any operational decisions will always be made with your best interests in mind.

                  Lost Objects

You are responsible for your personal belongings throughout the tour. Before leaving any vehicle, train, restaurant, hotel, or attraction, make sure you have all your personal items with you.

If our staff finds a lost item, we will keep it at our office whenever possible. However, Cusco Journeys cannot accept responsibility for personal items that are lost, forgotten, or left unattended during the tour.

After a delicious lunch in Urubamba, we’ll travel to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town that remains inhabited. This traditional town is a wonderful example of pre-Colombian architecture. Later in the afternoon in Ollantaytambo we’ll catch the train to Aguas Calientes to get ready to explore Machu Picchu early the next morning.

I would remove “Entrance to Salt Mines (15 Peruvian Soles)” from this section. The current itinerary does not visit the Maras Salt Mines, so keeping that charge would create an inconsistency between the itinerary and the Not Included section.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Cusco Tours and Rainbow Mountain 5 Days / 4 Nights

1.- Is the Cusco Tours and Rainbow Mountain 5 Days 4 Nights package worth it?

Yes. This itinerary combines Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Rainbow Mountain in one complete journey. It is a great option for travelers who want to experience Peru’s main highlights without committing to a multi-day trekking program.

2.- What makes this tour different from a regular Cusco and Machu Picchu tour?

The main difference is the inclusion of Rainbow Mountain, one of the most spectacular high-altitude landscapes in Peru. You can enjoy the cultural and archaeological highlights of Cusco and Machu Picchu while also experiencing an unforgettable Andean adventure.

3.- Is Rainbow Mountain difficult to visit?

The Rainbow Mountain hike is considered moderate, but the high altitude makes it physically demanding. The mountain reaches approximately 5,020 meters (16,466 feet), so good acclimatization in Cusco is important before attempting the hike.

4.- Can I rent a horse for the Rainbow Mountain hike?

Yes. Local horse rentals are available at the starting point of the hike. This option can be useful if you find the altitude or uphill sections challenging. Your guide can help you coordinate with local horse providers during the excursion.

5.- Is this tour suitable for travelers who do not want a multi-day trek?

Yes. Most of the itinerary consists of guided sightseeing and cultural experiences rather than long trekking days. The main physical activity is the Rainbow Mountain hike, while the other days focus on Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu.

6.- Is the Sacred Valley worth visiting before Machu Picchu?

Absolutely. The Sacred Valley offers important historical and cultural context before your Machu Picchu experience. Pisac and Ollantaytambo showcase impressive Inca architecture, traditional Andean culture, and spectacular mountain scenery.

7.- How much time will I have to explore Machu Picchu?

The guided visit to Machu Picchu lasts approximately two hours and covers important areas of the citadel. Afterward, you return to Aguas Calientes, where you have some free time before taking the train back toward Cusco.

8.- Can I add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain to this tour?

Yes. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain can be added with a separate entrance permit, subject to availability. Advance reservation is recommended because the number of available tickets is limited.

9.- Is this tour a good option for families or older travelers?

It can be a good option for travelers who prefer cultural sightseeing instead of a multi-day trek. However, Rainbow Mountain reaches more than 5,000 meters, so travelers should consider their fitness level and ability to handle high altitude before booking.

10.- How early should I book the Cusco Tours and Rainbow Mountain 5 Days 4 Nights?

We recommend booking as early as possible, especially if you have specific travel dates or want a particular Machu Picchu circuit. Early booking gives you a better opportunity to secure Machu Picchu tickets, train services, and your preferred hotel category.

                              Final Balance Payment

If you have an outstanding balance, please complete your payment at least two days before your tour begins. For this reason, your reservation cannot be finalized until you have paid the remaining balance.

Whenever possible, we recommend paying the balance in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing. Meanwhile, several ATMs are available along Avenida El Sol where you can withdraw both currencies.

Credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal are also accepted either online or in person. However, payments through Niubiz or PayPal carry a 5% service fee. We do not accept personal or traveler’s checks.

                              Luggage and Passport Requirements

If you have luggage that you won’t need during your tour, you may store it free of charge at our office or at your hotel. Please arrange this during your briefing or contact us before your departure.

In addition, we recommend carrying only a small daypack during your excursions. Avoid leaving valuables inside stored luggage and, whenever possible, use your hotel’s safety deposit box.

Your original passport is required for entry to Machu Picchu and must match the passport information provided during your reservation. If you renew or replace your passport after booking, please notify our team immediately so we can update your entrance tickets whenever regulations allow.

                              Machu Picchu Entrance Circuits

Machu Picchu operates with fixed entrance times and designated visitor circuits established by the Peruvian authorities to protect the archaeological site.

                              Main Visitor Circuits

                              • Circuit 1: Panoramic viewpoints and upper terraces.
                              • Circuit 2: Main archaeological sector of the citadel.
                              • Circuit 3: Lower terraces and agricultural area.

Most of our tours use the circuit assigned by the Ministry of Culture according to ticket availability. Generally, entry times are scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.; however, schedules may vary depending on availability and government regulations.

Once you leave Machu Picchu, re-entry is not permitted. Therefore, if you would like to visit another circuit or hike one of the mountains, you must request an additional entrance ticket in advance, subject to availability.

                              Hotel Pick-Up and Return

Complimentary pick-up is available from hotels located within Cusco’s Historic Center.

Your exact pick-up time will be confirmed during the briefing or one day before your tour. Depending on traffic conditions and hotel locations, the pick-up time may vary by approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Some streets in Cusco are too narrow for vehicle access. Therefore, if your accommodation is located in one of these areas, our team will arrange the nearest convenient meeting point.

After your visit to Machu Picchu, you’ll take the shuttle bus back to Aguas Calientes. From there, you’ll travel by train to Ollantaytambo, where our representative will meet you for the transfer back to Cusco. Please arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure.

                              Weather and Group Tours

Cusco has two distinct seasons. The dry season (April to October) usually offers sunny days and cool nights, while the rainy season (November to March) brings occasional afternoon showers.

For this reason, we recommend wearing layered clothing throughout the year. A waterproof jacket is advisable during the rainy season.

Our group tours welcome travelers of different ages and fitness levels. Everyone can explore at a comfortable pace while following the guide’s instructions throughout the journey.

If weather conditions or operational requirements cause a minor schedule change, your guide will keep the group informed and provide the best possible alternative.

                              Strikes, Personal Belongings and Safety

Although uncommon, strikes or demonstrations may occasionally affect transportation services in Peru. If this happens, Cusco Journeys will make every reasonable effort to maintain your itinerary or provide suitable alternatives whenever possible.

Please take responsibility for your personal belongings throughout the tour. Before leaving any vehicle, restaurant, hotel, or attraction, make sure you have all your personal items with you.

If our staff finds any belongings, we will keep them at our office whenever possible. However, Cusco Journeys cannot accept responsibility for personal items that are lost, forgotten, or left unattended during the tour.

                                  Before You Go

                                  Travel Information

At Cusco Journeys, we’re committed to making your adventure in Peru memorable, safe, and easy to enjoy. In this brief guide, you’ll find the most important details to review before starting your trek or tour — from altitude preparation and luggage management to Machu Picchu entry and health tips.

So, take a moment to read it carefully, as it will help you prepare properly and experience the magic of the Andes with comfort and confidence.

                                  Briefing Before the Trek

All pre-trek briefings are personally conducted at your hotel in Cusco around 5:00 pm, one or two days before your trek or tour begins. The meeting lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes and is an essential part of your preparation.

During this session, our guide will explain the itinerary in detail, provide your duffel bag, and answer any final questions. This way, you’ll be fully prepared before starting your adventure.

                                  Acclimatization in Cusco

It’s very important to be well acclimated to the altitude before starting any trek. Cusco lies at 3,400 meters (11,150 ft) above sea level, so your body needs time to adjust to the thinner air.

For this reason, we recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before your trek begins. By doing so, you can reduce the risk of altitude sickness and enjoy your trip more comfortably.

What to Do Before Your Trek

During your acclimatization days, it’s best to take things slowly. At the same time, you can explore some nearby attractions:

                                  • Cusco City Tour: Discover the Main Square, the Cathedral, and Qoricancha.
                                  • Sacred Valley Tour: Visit Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and the Maras Salt Mines.
                                  • Moray & Maras: Learn about Inca agricultural techniques.
                                  • Q’eswachaka Bridge: Experience the last Inca handwoven bridge.
                                  • Rainbow Mountain: Hike one of Peru’s most colorful landscapes.

These activities not only help you adapt to the altitude, but also allow you to experience the region’s rich culture and history.

                                  Trek Balance Payment (in Cusco)

If you have an outstanding balance, please complete the payment at least two days before your trek or tour. Otherwise, your reservation cannot be fully confirmed.

Whenever possible, we kindly ask you to pay in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing session. However, you may also pay by credit/debit card or PayPal, either online or in person. Please note that a 5% service fee will apply.

Additionally, there are several ATMs along Avenida Sol where you can withdraw both currencies. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept bank checks or traveler’s checks.

                                  Can I Store My Luggage?

Absolutely! During your One Day Inca Trail Trek, you can store your main luggage safely at our office or at your hotel, both free of charge.

In addition, any items you don’t need during the trek can remain at your hotel. Most hotels offer secure storage. However, we recommend not leaving valuables in your bags. Instead, store them in the hotel safe and request a receipt for insurance purposes.

Machu Picchu Entrance Circuits and Schedule

Machu Picchu operates with timed entries and fixed circuits to preserve the site. Therefore, it’s important to follow your assigned route.

                                  Main circuits include:

                                  • Circuit 1: Upper viewpoints
                                  • Circuit 2: Main citadel area

For Inca Trail tours, Circuit 3 is typically assigned, usually around 8:00 or 9:00 am. After completing your visit, park rangers will direct you to the exit, as re-entry is not allowed.

                                  Pick-Up of Guests

All pick-ups are arranged from your hotel in Cusco. For convenience, we recommend staying in the historic center.

Your guide will confirm the exact time one day before the tour. However, please note that timing may vary by 30–45 minutes due to traffic or hotel location.

Return from Machu Picchu to Cusco

Returning from Machu Picchu involves several steps; however, everything is well organized and included in your tour.

First, you’ll take a 25-minute bus down to Aguas Calientes.
Then, you’ll board the train to Ollantaytambo.
After that, a transfer will take you back to Cusco.

In total, the journey includes a 1 hour 45-minute train ride followed by a 2-hour drive.

                                  Group Tours

Our group tours bring together travelers of different ages and fitness levels. This means everyone can walk at their own pace while still enjoying the experience.

If necessary, the guide may adjust the itinerary in coordination with the group.

                                  Strikes and Demonstrations

Occasionally, strikes or protests may occur in Peru and may affect travel plans. In such cases, Cusco Journeys will do everything possible to maintain your itinerary or adjust schedules if needed.

Above all, your safety is our top priority.

                                  Lost Objects

You are responsible for your personal belongings throughout the tour. Therefore, always double-check your items after each stop.

In addition, avoid leaving anything unattended, as it may be mistaken for lost property.

                                      FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions About Ausangate Trek

1.- What is the Ausangate Trek to Machu Picchu?

The Ausangate Trek is a 4-day adventure through the Peruvian Andes, offering spectacular views of snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, and Rainbow Mountain. It concludes with a visit to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, giving you a chance to immerse yourself in Andean culture.

2.- How difficult is the Ausangate Trek?

The trek is considered moderate to difficult because of the high-altitude environment and long hiking days. While not a technical climb, it requires good physical fitness and stamina. Acclimatization in Cusco is important to prevent altitude sickness and ensure a smoother trek.

3.- What should I bring for the trek?

Essential items include trekking boots, rain gear, warm layers for cold nights, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. Don’t forget a camera, personal medications, and a sturdy backpack to carry your belongings throughout the trek.

4.- Can I do the trek if I’m not an experienced hiker?

Yes, the trek is manageable for novice hikers as long as you are in good physical condition and can handle long days of walking. Acclimatizing to the altitude before the trek is crucial. If you train and prepare, you’ll be ready for the challenge.

5.- When is the best time to do the Ausangate Trek?

The best months are from April to October, during the dry season. These months offer more stable weather, with clearer skies and less rain, making the trekking conditions ideal for the challenging landscapes of the Peruvian Andes.

6.- Do I need to be physically fit for this trek?

Yes, a moderate level of fitness is required due to the high altitudes and challenging terrain. Training with some hill hikes and cardio will prepare you. However, the trek can be done at your own pace, and acclimatization to altitude is key for success.

7.- Will there be a guide and support staff on the trek?

Yes, an experienced guide will lead you through the trek, providing historical insights and safety. You’ll also have a trekking chef preparing delicious meals along the way, and porters will carry your camping equipment to ease the load.

8.- What kind of accommodation will I have during the trek?

The trek features camping at picturesque spots like Puca Cocha and Yanacocha Lake, with incredible views of the mountains and lakes. On the final night, you’ll stay in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, where you can relax before visiting Machu Picchu.

9.- What can I expect to see on the trek?

Expect to encounter breathtaking landscapes like snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, and glacial valleys. You’ll also visit Rainbow Mountain, home to vibrant mineral formations, and enjoy encounters with wildlife like llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas.

10.- What happens after the trek?

After completing the trek, you’ll board a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes, relax in a hotel, and then take an early bus to Machu Picchu. After your guided tour of the site, you’ll return to Ollantaytambo by train, then back to Cusco by bus.

                                      Acclimatization in Cusco

It’s very important to be well acclimated to the altitude before starting any trek. Cusco lies at 3,400 meters (11,150 ft) above sea level, and your body needs time to adjust to the thinner air.

We recommend that you arrive in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before your trek begins to prevent altitude sickness and to enjoy your trip without discomfort.

Whenever possible, we kindly ask you to settle the remaining balance in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing session. There are several ATMs along Avenida Sol where you can withdraw both currencies.

You may also pay by credit/debit card or PayPal, either online or in person; however, please note that a 5% service fee will be applied by our payment gateways (Niubiz and PayPal).

                                      Duffel Bag or Canvas Case

                                      You’ll receive a duffel bag or canvas case during the briefing. Size: 60 × 24 × 22 cm (23.6 × 9.45 × 8.66 in), Maximum weight: 6 kg / 13 lb, including clothes and personal items.

Our team of porters will carry your bag throughout the trek and hand it back to you at each camp. Remember that this limit includes your sleeping bag and any personal belongings you wish to take.

Can I store my luggage at your office?

Absolutely! During your trip, you may store your main luggage safely at our office (arrange it with us during your briefing or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.

Any items you won’t need during the trek can remain at your hotel — most hotels offer secure luggage storage. Please avoid leaving valuables in your bags; instead, place them in the hotel safe and request an itemized receipt, as many insurance companies require this in case of loss.

For added security, you can also store important items such as credit cards in a sealed and signed envelope.

Machu Picchu Entrance Circuits and Schedule

Machu Picchu now operates with specific timed entries and fixed circuits to preserve the site and ensure an enjoyable experience for all visitors.

                                      Main Circuits

                                      • Circuit 1: Upper viewpoints and panoramic terraces
                                      • Circuit 2: Central area of the citadel
                                      • Circuit 3: Lower sector and agricultural terraces

For our Inca Trail groups, the standard visit is usually Circuit 3, around 8:00 or 9:00 a.m., depending on ticket availability and government regulations. After completing your route, park rangers will guide you toward the exit — re-entry is not allowed.

If you wish to explore another route or stay longer, you can request an additional entrance ticket (subject to availability and extra cost).

                                      Pick-Up of Guests

All pick-ups are made from your hotel within Cusco City. We recommend staying in the historic center for easier access. Our guide will confirm your pick-up time one day before the tour, but please note that it may vary by 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic and hotel locations.

Cusco is an ancient city with narrow, cobbled streets, and some hotels or Airbnbs may not have direct vehicle access. If your accommodation is in such an area, we’ll coordinate the closest possible meeting point for your convenience.

Return from Machu Picchu to Cusco

Returning from Machu Picchu involves several steps, but don’t worry — everything is included in your tour. After visiting Machu Picchu, you’ll take a 25-minute bus down to Aguas Calientes (buses operate on a first-come, first-served basis).

From there, you’ll board a train to Ollantaytambo; your guide will provide the tickets and indicate your departure time. Please arrive at the platform 30 minutes before departure.

The train ride takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, followed by a 2-hour bus journey back to Cusco City.

                                      Strikes and Demonstrations

Occasionally, strikes or protests may occur in Peru, which can affect roads or train schedules. In these cases, Cusco Journeys will make every effort to maintain your itinerary or adjust departure times if needed. Your safety always comes first, and all decisions will be made to protect it.

                                      Lost Objects

You are responsible for your personal belongings throughout the tour. Please be mindful of where you leave your items and make sure to remove everything from our vans, tents, and restaurants after each stop. Avoid leaving anything unattended during the hike, as other trekkers or staff might mistake it for lost property.
