Along the way, we’ll stop to savor some of Peru’s exotic fruits, including the delicious passion fruit and granadilla.
As we continue, we’ll reach the village of Colpapampa, also known as the “forest cloudy brow.” This charming village is a paradise for nature lovers, with waterfalls, hot springs, fruit trees, a variety of birds, and lush plant life all around. If we’re fortunate, we might even spot the famous cock of the rock, Peru’s national bird.
We’ll enjoy a hearty lunch in La Playa before catching our transport to the Hydroelectric Train Station. From here, you’ll have two options:

The trek is challenging but manageable for moderately fit individuals. It covers approximately 72 km (45 miles) and is more demanding than the Inca Trail. Proper acclimatization in Cusco for at least 2 days is recommended to minimize altitude sickness.
2.- When is the best time to hike the Salkantay?
The dry season from April to November is ideal. June to September is the busiest period, while May and October offer the best combination of weather and fewer crowds.

Briefing Before the Trek
All pre-trek briefings are personally conducted at your hotel in Cusco around 5:00 pm, one or two day before your trek or tour begins. The meeting lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes and is an essential part of your preparation.
During this session, our guide will go over the itinerary in detail, provide your duffel bag, and answer any final questions to ensure you’re fully prepared for your adventure.
Acclimatization in Cusco
It’s very important to be well acclimated to the altitude before starting any trek. Cusco lies at 3,400 meters (11,150 ft) above sea level, and your body needs time to adjust to the thinner air.
We recommend that you arrive in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before your trek begins to prevent altitude sickness and to enjoy your trip without discomfort.

Can I store my luggage at your office?

Any items you won’t need during the trek can remain at your hotel — most hotels offer secure luggage storage. Please avoid leaving valuables in your bags; instead, place them in the hotel safe and request an itemized receipt, as many insurance companies require this in case of loss.

Pick-Up of Guests
All pick-ups are made from your hotel within Cusco City. We recommend staying in the historic center for easier access. Our guide will confirm your pick-up time one day before the tour, but please note that it may vary by 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic and hotel locations.
Cusco is an ancient city with narrow, cobbled streets, and some hotels or Airbnbs may not have direct vehicle access. If your accommodation is in such an area, we’ll coordinate the closest possible meeting point for your convenience.
Return from Machu Picchu to Cusco
Returning from Machu Picchu involves several steps, but don’t worry — everything is included in your tour. After visiting Machu Picchu, you’ll take a 25-minute bus down to Aguas Calientes (buses operate on a first-come, first-served basis).
From there, you’ll board a train to Ollantaytambo; your guide will provide the tickets and indicate your departure time. Please arrive at the platform 30 minutes before departure.
The train ride takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, followed by a 2-hour bus journey back to Cusco City.
Group Tours

Day 1: Cusco – Taray – Pisac – Urubamba – Ollantaytambo.
Highlight of the Day: Explore Pisac and Ollantaytambo while traveling through the Sacred Valley.
This tour will start at 7:45am when we pick you up at your hotel, and will immediately start heading out of Cusco towards the Sacred Valley. On the way there, we will stop at a local alpaca farm, where you will get the opportunity to meet with some of the locals and feed some of the animals.
Our first stop in the valley will be Pisac, a local village with a thriving market and beautiful ruins. The guide will give an explanation of the ruins, then you will have time to explore the ruins and the market on your own.
After Pisac, we will continue onto Urubamba, where we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant (Included). After lunch, we will continue onto our final stop of the day, Ollantaytambo. These famous ruins were built to match the sun’s cycle, aligning the temple with the nearby mountains to track the solstices.
This temple also has quite intricate agricultural terraces, allowing you to experience some of the ancient technology that was available to the Incas. Our guide will give you an explanation of the site, after which you will have free time to explore the ruins on your own.
After some time, we will drop you off at your hotel in Ollantaytambo Village. Where you will rest very well for the following day that will have a Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Highlight of the Day: Hike through Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna before reaching Intipunku.
We will pick you up from your Ollantaytambo hotel early in the morning (about 5:00 am), followed by a short walk to the train station. From here, you will take the train to Kilometer 104 (Km 104), the starting point of your Short Inca Trail experience.
At Km 104, you will pass the checkpoint and visit the archaeological site of Chachabamba (2,170 m / 7,170 ft), an important religious and administrative center used by the Incas before reaching Machu Picchu.
From here, you will begin a gradual ascent for about 2–3 hours along original Inca stone steps, surrounded by lush vegetation and diverse flora and fauna.
Along the way, you will pass a waterfall before reaching Wiñay Wayna(2,650 m / 8,700 ft), one of the most impressive archaeological sites on the Inca Trail. Here, you will explore its terraces, temples, and water channels, and enjoy lunch with stunning views of the Sacred Valley.
After the visit, continue hiking for about 1½ hours along a relatively gentle section of the trail until reaching the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) at 2,720 m (8,920 ft).
From this point, you will enjoy your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu before descending toward the citadel and continuing to Aguas Calientes for the night.

Before You Begin Your Journey
Before your tour begins, we recommend reviewing the following details about your schedule, tickets, transportation, weather, and other important arrangements. This information will help you prepare for each stage of your Cusco and Machu Picchu experience.
Pre-Tour Briefing
After your arrival in Cusco, our team will hold your pre-tour briefing at your hotel. Once your reservation is confirmed, you’ll also receive your detailed itinerary and travel information by email.
During the briefing, your guide will explain the itinerary, provide your entrance tickets and transportation details, answer any questions, and confirm your pick-up time for the following day.
Final Balance Payment
If you have an outstanding balance, please complete your payment at least two days before your tour begins. For this reason, reservations cannot be finalized until you have paid the remaining balance.
Whenever possible, we recommend paying the balance in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing. Several ATMs are available along Avenida El Sol where both currencies can be withdrawn.
Credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal are also accepted either online or in person. However, payments through Niubiz or PayPal carry a 5% service fee. We do not accept personal or traveler’s checks.
Luggage Storage
If you have luggage that you won’t need during your tour, you may store it free of charge at our office or at your hotel. Please arrange this during your briefing or contact us before your departure.
In addition, we recommend carrying only a small daypack during your excursion. Avoid leaving valuables inside stored luggage. Whenever possible, use your hotel’s safety deposit box and request a receipt for valuable items if required by your travel insurance.
Passport Requirements
Your original passport is required for entry to Machu Picchu and must match the passport information provided during your reservation.
If you renew or replace your passport after booking, please notify us immediately so our team can update your entrance tickets whenever regulations allow. We also recommend carrying a digital copy of your passport throughout your trip.
Machu Picchu Entrance Circuits
Machu Picchu operates with fixed entrance times and designated visitor circuits established by the Peruvian authorities to protect the archaeological site.
Main Visitor Circuits
Circuit 1: Panoramic viewpoints and upper terraces.
Circuit 2: Main archaeological sector of the citadel.
Circuit 3: Lower terraces and agricultural area.
Most of our tours use the circuit assigned by the Ministry of Culture according to ticket availability. Entry times are generally scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., although they may vary depending on availability and government regulations.
Once you leave Machu Picchu, re-entry is not permitted. Therefore, if you’d like to visit another circuit or hike one of the mountains, you must request an additional entrance ticket in advance, subject to availability.
Hotel Pick-Up
Complimentary pick-up is available from hotels located within Cusco’s Historic Center.
Your exact pick-up time will be confirmed during the briefing or one day before your tour. Depending on traffic conditions and hotel locations, pick-up times may vary by approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Some streets in Cusco are too narrow for vehicle access. If your accommodation is located in one of these areas, our team will arrange the nearest convenient meeting point.
Return from Machu Picchu
After your visit to Machu Picchu, you’ll take the shuttle bus back to Aguas Calientes. Bus services operate continuously, and travelers board on a first-come, first-served basis.
From Aguas Calientes, you’ll travel by train to Ollantaytambo, where our representative will meet you for the transfer back to Cusco. Please arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure. Overall, the return journey usually takes around four hours.
Weather and Clothing
Cusco has two distinct seasons. The dry season (April to October) usually offers sunny days and cool nights, while the rainy season (November to March) brings occasional afternoon showers.
For this reason, we recommend wearing layered clothing throughout the year, as temperatures can change significantly between the morning, afternoon, and evening. A waterproof jacket is advisable during the rainy season.
Group Tours
Our group tours welcome travelers of different ages and fitness levels. Everyone can explore at a comfortable pace while following the guide’s instructions throughout the journey.
Occasionally, minor schedule adjustments may be necessary due to weather conditions, operational requirements, or regulations. If this occurs, your guide will keep the group informed and work to ensure the best possible experience.
Strikes and Demonstrations
Although uncommon, strikes or demonstrations may occasionally affect transportation services in Peru. If this happens, Cusco Journeys will make every reasonable effort to maintain your itinerary or provide suitable alternatives whenever possible.

Lost and Found
Please take responsibility for your personal belongings throughout the tour. Before leaving any vehicle, restaurant, hotel, or attraction, make sure you have all your personal items with you.
If our staff finds any belongings, we will keep them at our office whenever possible. However, Cusco Journeys cannot accept responsibility for personal items that are lost, forgotten, or left unattended during the tour.

By reviewing these important details in advance, you’ll know what to expect before, during, and after your tour, allowing you to travel with greater confidence and peace of mind.
Pre-Tour Briefing
All pre-tour briefings are held at your hotel in Cusco after your arrival. Once your reservation is confirmed, you’ll also receive your detailed itinerary and travel information by email.
During the briefing, your guide will explain the itinerary, deliver your entrance tickets and transportation details, answer any questions, and confirm your pick-up time for the following day.
Final Balance Payment
If you have an outstanding balance, please complete your payment at least two days before your tour begins. Reservations cannot be finalized until the remaining balance has been paid.
Whenever possible, we recommend paying the balance in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing. Several ATMs are available along Avenida El Sol where both currencies can be withdrawn.
Credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal are also accepted either online or in person. Please note that payments made through Niubiz or PayPal are subject to a 5% service fee. We do not accept personal or traveler’s checks.
Luggage Storage
If you have luggage that you won’t need during your tour, you may store it free of charge at our office or at your hotel. Please arrange this during your briefing or contact us before your departure.
We recommend carrying only a small daypack during your excursion. Avoid leaving valuables inside stored luggage. Whenever possible, use your hotel’s safety deposit box and request a receipt for valuable items if required by your travel insurance.
Passport Requirements
Your original passport is required for entry to Machu Picchu and must match the passport information provided during your reservation.
If you renew or replace your passport after booking, please notify us immediately so we can update your entrance tickets whenever regulations allow. We also recommend carrying a digital copy of your passport throughout your trip.
Machu Picchu Entrance Circuits
Machu Picchu operates with fixed entrance times and designated visitor circuits established by the Peruvian authorities to protect the archaeological site.
Main Visitor Circuits
Circuit 1: Panoramic viewpoints and upper terraces.
Circuit 2: Main archaeological sector of the citadel.
Circuit 3: Lower terraces and agricultural area.
Most of our tours include the circuit assigned by the Ministry of Culture according to ticket availability. Entry times are generally scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., although they may vary depending on availability and government regulations.
Once you leave Machu Picchu, re-entry is not permitted. If you’d like to visit another circuit or hike one of the mountains, an additional entrance ticket is required and is subject to availability.
Hotel Pick-Up
Complimentary pick-up is available from hotels located within Cusco’s Historic Center.
Your exact pick-up time will be confirmed during the briefing or one day before your tour. Depending on traffic conditions and hotel locations, pick-up times may vary by approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Some streets in Cusco are too narrow for vehicle access. If your accommodation is located in one of these areas, we’ll arrange the nearest convenient meeting point.
Return from Machu Picchu
After your visit to Machu Picchu, you’ll take the shuttle bus back to Aguas Calientes. Bus services operate continuously, and boarding is organized on a first-come, first-served basis.
From Aguas Calientes, you’ll travel by train to Ollantaytambo, where our representative will meet you for the transfer back to Cusco. Please arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure. The complete return journey usually takes around four hours.
Weather and Clothing
Cusco has two distinct seasons. The dry season (April to October) usually offers sunny days and cool nights, while the rainy season (November to March) brings occasional afternoon showers.
We recommend wearing layered clothing throughout the year, as temperatures can change significantly between the morning, afternoon, and evening. A waterproof jacket is advisable during the rainy season.
Group Tours
Our group tours welcome travelers of different ages and fitness levels. Everyone is encouraged to explore at a comfortable pace while following the guide’s instructions throughout the journey.
Occasionally, minor schedule adjustments may be necessary due to weather conditions, operational requirements, or regulations. If this occurs, your guide will keep the group informed and ensure the best possible experience.
Strikes and Demonstrations
Although uncommon, strikes or demonstrations may occasionally affect transportation services in Peru. Should this happen, Cusco Journeys will make every reasonable effort to maintain your itinerary or provide suitable alternatives whenever possible.
Your safety and well-being remain our highest priorities, and any operational decisions will always be made with your best interests in mind.
Lost and Found
Please take responsibility for your personal belongings throughout the tour. Before leaving any vehicle, restaurant, hotel, or attraction, make sure you have all your personal items with you.
Any belongings found by our staff will be kept at our office whenever possible. However, Cusco Journeys cannot accept responsibility for personal items that are lost, forgotten, or left unattended during the tour.

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, your guide and driver will pick you up around 8:20 a.m. to begin a colorful journey through the Andean countryside that surrounds Cusco. The drive offers stunning views of rolling farmlands, traditional villages, and snow-capped peaks.
Our first destination is the charming town of Maras, from where you can admire the majestic Vilcanota Mountain Range, with the iconic El Chicon and Veronica peaks dominating the skyline.
This picturesque village is a blend of pre-Hispanic roots and colonial architecture, showcasing the enduring character of the Andes. Continuing our adventure, we’ll head to Moray, an extraordinary archaeological site located about 7 miles southwest of Maras.
Here, a series of circular terraces descend into the earth, forming an enormous amphitheater-like structure that once served as an Inca agricultural laboratory—a remarkable example of their advanced understanding of microclimates and crop cultivation.
Our final stop is the world-famous Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras), a breathtaking network of more than 3,000 terraced salt pools cascading down the mountainside. Pre-Tour Briefing
After your arrival in Cusco, our team will hold your pre-tour briefing at your hotel. Once your reservation is confirmed, you’ll also receive your detailed itinerary and travel information by email.
During the briefing, your guide will explain the itinerary, provide your entrance tickets and transportation details, answer any questions, and confirm your pick-up time for the following day.
Final Balance Payment
If you have an outstanding balance, please complete your payment at least two days before your tour begins. For this reason, your reservation cannot be finalized until you have paid the remaining balance.
Whenever possible, we recommend paying the balance in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) during your briefing. Meanwhile, several ATMs are available along Avenida El Sol where you can withdraw both currencies.
Credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal are also accepted either online or in person. However, payments through Niubiz or PayPal carry a 5% service fee. We do not accept personal or traveler’s checks.
Luggage and Passport Requirements
If you have luggage that you won’t need during your tour, you may store it free of charge at our office or at your hotel. Please arrange this during your briefing or contact us before your departure.
In addition, we recommend carrying only a small daypack during your excursions. Avoid leaving valuables inside stored luggage and, whenever possible, use your hotel’s safety deposit box.
Your original passport is required for entry to Machu Picchu and must match the passport information provided during your reservation. If you renew or replace your passport after booking, please notify our team immediately so we can update your entrance tickets whenever regulations allow.
Machu Picchu Entrance Circuits
Machu Picchu operates with fixed entrance times and designated visitor circuits established by the Peruvian authorities to protect the archaeological site.

Most of our tours use the circuit assigned by the Ministry of Culture according to ticket availability. Generally, entry times are scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.; however, schedules may vary depending on availability and government regulations.
Once you leave Machu Picchu, re-entry is not permitted. Therefore, if you would like to visit another circuit or hike one of the mountains, you must request an additional entrance ticket in advance, subject to availability.
Hotel Pick-Up and Return
Complimentary pick-up is available from hotels located within Cusco’s Historic Center.
Your exact pick-up time will be confirmed during the briefing or one day before your tour. Depending on traffic conditions and hotel locations, the pick-up time may vary by approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Some streets in Cusco are too narrow for vehicle access. Therefore, if your accommodation is located in one of these areas, our team will arrange the nearest convenient meeting point.
After your visit to Machu Picchu, you’ll take the shuttle bus back to Aguas Calientes. From there, you’ll travel by train to Ollantaytambo, where our representative will meet you for the transfer back to Cusco. Please arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure.
Weather and Group Tours
Cusco has two distinct seasons. The dry season (April to October) usually offers sunny days and cool nights, while the rainy season (November to March) brings occasional afternoon showers.
For this reason, we recommend wearing layered clothing throughout the year. A waterproof jacket is advisable during the rainy season.

After breakfast, we begin a gradual climb of 2–3 hours to Alpaca Pass (4,870 m / 15,978 ft), where you will enjoy wide views of valleys and glaciers. From the summit, the trail descends for about 2 hours to Anantapata, where we will stop for lunch and take time to rest.
In the afternoon, the route continues with a steady ascent of approximately 2 hours to Warmisaya Pass (4,985 m / 16,355 ft), the highest point of the trek. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views before beginning the descent.
The trail then leads down for about 1 hour to Surineqocha Lagoon, where we set up camp and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. This area offers some of the most dramatic landscapes of the trek, with open views of snow-capped peaks and a unique sense of isolation in the Andes.

Highlight of the day: Visit Rainbow Mountain early and explore the impressive Red Valley.
After an early breakfast, we begin a gradual hike of approximately 1.5 hours to Rainbow Mountain (5,100 m / 16,732 ft). Upon arrival, you will have time to explore and take photos while your guide explains the geological formation and unique colors of the mountain.
From here, the route continues toward the Red Valley, one of the most striking and less visited areas in the region. As you descend, the landscape opens into wide valleys, offering a different perspective of the surrounding mountains.
The trail leads toward Llacto Valley, where we will enjoy our final lunch with the trekking team. After lunch, we return to Cusco with a scenic 3-hour drive, passing traditional villages and enjoying the landscapes of the Andes.

Machu Picchu Entrance Circuits and Schedule
Machu Picchu now operates with specific timed entries and fixed circuits to preserve the site and ensure an enjoyable experience for all visitors.
Main Circuits
Circuit 1: Upper viewpoints and panoramic terraces
Circuit 2: Central area of the citadel
Circuit 3: Lower sector and agricultural terraces
For our Inca Trail groups, the standard visit is usually Circuit 3, around 8:00 or 9:00 a.m., depending on ticket availability and government regulations. After completing your route, park rangers will guide you toward the exit — re-entry is not allowed.
If you wish to explore another route or stay longer, you can request an additional entrance ticket (subject to availability and extra cost).
Pick-Up of Guests
All pick-ups are made from your hotel within Cusco City. We recommend staying in the historic center for easier access. Our guide will confirm your pick-up time one day before the tour, but please note that it may vary by 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic and hotel locations.
Cusco is an ancient city with narrow, cobbled streets, and some hotels or Airbnbs may not have direct vehicle access. If your accommodation is in such an area, we’ll coordinate the closest possible meeting point for your convenience.
Return from Machu Picchu to Cusco
Returning from Machu Picchu involves several steps, but don’t worry — everything is included in your tour. After visiting Machu Picchu, you’ll take a 25-minute bus down to Aguas Calientes (buses operate on a first-come, first-served basis).
From there, you’ll board a train to Ollantaytambo; your guide will provide the tickets and indicate your departure time. Please arrive at the platform 30 minutes before departure.
The train ride takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, followed by a 2-hour bus journey back to Cusco City.
Strikes and Demonstrations
Occasionally, strikes or protests may occur in Peru, which can affect roads or train schedules. In these cases, Cusco Journeys will make every effort to maintain your itinerary or adjust departure times if needed. Your safety always comes first, and all decisions will be made to protect it.
Lost Objects
You are responsible for your personal belongings throughout the tour. Please be mindful of where you leave your items and make sure to remove everything from our vans, tents, and restaurants after each stop. Avoid leaving anything unattended during the hike, as other trekkers or staff might mistake it for lost property.
